 Ray fishing

Best time:
Mid March to early May is the peak for our Ray fishing however Rays are generally seen all year round and well into double figures. The River Mersey seems to be the top venue for Rays over the last couple of years has been producing very good catches from October through to December and is well worth a try
.
Best tide:
High neaps to low springs 26' to 30'.Liverpool tides
.
Methods:
Uptiding or downtiding depending on where you are fishing ( ie, shallow or deep water ) will see you hook into the fish.
TACKLE
20-30 LB CLASS ROD, ABU 7000 SIZE MULTIPLIER ( NOT FIXED SPOOL ) A ONE OR TWO HOOK FLOWING TRACE OF 30- 50 LB. MONO, APPROX 3'-4' LONG COMPRISING OF SIZE 4/0- 6/0 HOOKS, ( I USE SAKUMA MANTAS ) LEAD SIZE SHOULD SUIT THE ROD AND TIDE CONDITIONS. DURING MARCH & APRIL, WHEN I FISH INSHORE I USUALLY SUGGEST A SIZE 1-1/0 THREE HOOK SCRATCHING RIG, THIS WILL ENABLE YOU TO TARGET OTHER SPECIES AS WELL AS THORNBACK RAY, WHICH, WHEN IN SHALLOW WATER TEND TO FEED ON A VARIETY OF SMALL BAITS.
BAITS
When offshore the best bait by far are large pieces of Mackerel, Herring or Squid. where as during the early months the Rays move in to lay their egg cases. During this time Rays can be caught on most types of bait: - Crab, Rag, Lug, Sand eel etc.
